TIME OUT (for youth)

Turn Down For What!

“They do not know, nor do they understand;
They walk about in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are unstable. I said, “You are gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”—Psalm 82:5-7

Rapper, Lil’ Jon, has created a new phrase craze, “Turn down for what!” What does it mean? Here’s an example: Young folks sometimes will play down their intelligence because the other kids make fun of them for being smart. Youth who are self-assured would say, “Turn down for what” why be less than who I am, why play down my intelligence. The video for this song is edgy to say the least but the phrase is on time. The phrase is also used by the party people who have the music turned up, the party is hyped and if asked to be quiet they reply, “turn down for what.” Our focus is on the first example. The phrase craze needs to be amped up in positive ways for the future betterment of our youth.

The world’s functional illiterates include more than 130 million children who do not attend school, 73 million of them girls.” (Taken from http://www.compassion.com/poverty/education.htm) Our young people need to know that it is a powerful thing to be smart. There are many rappers who have college degrees. David Banner has a Masters of Arts in Teaching; Ludacris graduated Summa Cum Laude from Georgia State University; Chuck D has a degree in Graphic Design; M.I.A. graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design; DJ Premier graduated from Prairie View A&M and there are many more. Turn down for what! God’s heirs, His children, are little gods on this earth and are expected to be like our Supreme Parent, God. God gave us the genius to excel and expects nothing less. Education is the answer, education is freedom, and education is a giant step toward living a successful life. Most times, fast money is not always safe money. To get in the music industry the rappers had to have the intelligence to know if someone was cheating them or not. They had to have the wisdom to know how to handle the monies they made. There is nothing stylish about being ignorant or rejecting brilliance.

Turn down for what! Never allow someone to make you less than who you are; you are the future of this country not to mention you can be in a position to acquire the bling for you and your family.
